Artist’s Statement
Over the past several years I have become increasingly convinced that “Art” does not reside in a particular object, but in the thoughts and ideas that surround it. I think of my images as the opening lines of a conversation, then picked up by the viewer. If the work has been successful it will be a long and satisfying exchange, the objects facilitating a continuum of ideas. Each image in relation to the others furthers the conversation. As an artist I have the means of directing the conversation, bringing to the table the subject du jour. Based on my own idiosyncratic interest, topics may range from the nature of life and death, to the fragility of beauty, or issues of identity and alienation. My current project focuses on the conflicting messages surrounding the socialization of alcohol and illicit substances in our culture. It is my hope that the viewer will be able to find enough of his or herself in the images to bring something of themselves to the table. Only then will the “Art” be complete. |
